HGOco Education Manager

The Education Manager is responsible for the administration, development and implementation of HGOco education programs, including but not limited to the Bauer Family High School Voice Studio, Opera Camps, Educational Residencies and Workshops, Community Programming and for the supervision of employees, visiting artists, and independent contractors associated with such programs. S/he serves as a key HGOco liaison with area school districts and community partners and, working closely with the HGOco Director, develops educational programming and events which align with Houston Grand Opera’s core mission and initiatives.



  • Evaluate and maintain current HGOco programming and when possible, develop new programming that engages K – 12 students, family audiences, teacher development and lifetime learners, particularly in underserved or diverse communities.
  • Serve as HGOco education liaison with area school districts and teachers, educational institutions, Houston arts organizations and other community organizations.
  • Create engaging educational materials that reflect innovative practices for mainstage student performances, Song of Houston initiatives, Opera To Go! productions and other programs determined in consultation with HGO and HGOco staff.
  • Develop and monitor complex program budgets, providing information as required for quarterly forecasting and grant proposal purposes.
  • Working with the Director of HGOco, develop a rubric/mechanism to evaluate educational programs and content in order to measure impact, sustainability and to track data as required for funding and grant reporting purposes.
  • Teach workshops and make public appearances to promote education programs.
  • Identify, train and manage teaching artists to implement some educational programming.
  • Recruit and train HGOco volunteers to assist with educational programs.
  • Work or consult with other HGO departments and city-wide arts and education partners to develop and implement strategies to promote educational programming.

Candidates must have an earned Bachelor degree in music education, arts education, arts administration or related music field. Experience in developing innovative and interdisciplinary curricula aligned with state or national curriculum standards, after-school programming, or community-based programming is strongly desired. Two years’ experience teaching in a K-12 school or school-related environment is strongly desired. Familiarity with Houston Independent School District or with a similarly-diverse metropolitan region will be extremely beneficial to the successful candidate. Must successfully complete a background check. Candidates must have reliable transportation as many events and meetings are off-site. Some nights and weekend work required.
